85% of Your Career Success Depends on This—Are You Prepared?

A Do-It-Yourself Guide to Developing Skills that Deliver ROI to Your Life

Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire.
— Arnold H. Glasow

Hi there,

In today's competitive landscape, mastering Personal Effectiveness Skills (PES) is crucial not just for getting ahead but for staying relevant and fulfilled. While technical abilities may open professional doors, your interpersonal skills will determine the height and pace of your career progression.

🧠 On My Mind:

I used to believe that hard skills were everything, especially right after graduating as an engineer. I even looked down on liberal arts degrees. Little did I know how wrong I was. Over the years, I've come to realize that a significant part of career success depends on the relationships you build and your ability to foster understanding without judgment. Reflecting on my own journey and studying successful clients, I've identified eight vital skills for any ambitious professional, master these and see your career lift off 🚀

Research from Harvard University, the Carnegie Foundation, and Stanford Research Center has found that 85% of job success comes from having well-developed personal effectiveness skills and people skills, while only 15% comes from technical skills and knowledge.

🔍 The Why:

Developing personal effectiveness skills is crucial. Among the most successful people I've read about, the happiest CXOs I've worked with, and those who seem truly fulfilled, all are passionate about growing in these areas. You might think, "I'm great at critical thinking," or "I communicate daily," or "My adaptability is excellent." But having these skills and consistently putting them into practice are two different things.

When I talk about these skills, I mean people who live and breathe the ability to achieve goals efficiently while managing their time, resources, and priorities.

Here’s my list of Top PES:

  1. Adaptability: The only constant is change. Master the art of pivoting to thrive rather than feel overwhelmed.

  2. Emotional Intelligence: Understand and manage emotions to foster connection, harmony, and higher consciousness.

  3. Communication: Empower others through active listening and evoking awareness.

  4. Critical Thinking: Make informed, conscious, and deliberate choices in your personal and professional life.

  5. Learning Agility: Continuously expand your skills and apply them in dynamic environments.

  6. Persistence: Steadily progress toward mastery, overcoming obstacles instead of giving up at "this was a failure."

  7. Time Management: Prioritize tasks and focus on what truly matters, delegating everything else.

  8. Intuition: Develop quick, insightful decision-making to improve empathy and understanding in relationships.

🕰️ When to Take Notice:

Notice the need to improve your personal effectiveness skills when you find yourself struggling with daily tasks.

🪞 Coaching: Being Intentional Every Day

In coaching, we develop the muscle of intentionality by consciously making decisions that move us toward where we want to be. This list of skills is not a god-given gift; it’s the product of setting benchmarks, applying strategies, reflecting on results, and continuously improving. By focusing on these skills and integrating them into your daily routine, you create a powerful cycle of growth and achievement.
